EDUCATION

HRACC’s educational initiatives build community awareness of social justice, human rights, and nonviolence, equipping individuals with the tools to advocate, organize, and drive meaningful change. Through events, partnerships, and outreach, we empower all ages to engage in a shared commitment to justice and equality.

  • The Annual Gandhi King Gyatso Season for Nonviolence (SNV) runs January 30 thru April 4, 2025. The SNV brings attention to the philosophy of attaining peace through nonviolent action as emphasized by the bookend memorial anniversaries of Mohandas Gandhi (Jan 30) and Martin Luther King Jr. (April 4). HRACC also bring awareness to Tibet Uprising Day (March 10), the birthday of Cesar Chavez (March 31), and Freedom Day in South Africa — a public holiday celebrating the first post-apartheid elections held in 1994 (April 27).

  • For a wider breadth of the season, HRACC highlights Central Oregon Community College’s 18th Annual Season for Nonviolence Events:  https://cocc.edu/departments/foundation/cls/season-of-nonviolence
  • Human Rights Day: Celebrated on December 10, Human Rights Day includes public displays, educational presentations, and group discussions centered on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These events connect local human rights issues with global principles, encouraging a broad understanding of dignity and equality.

  • School Art Exhibits: Through partnerships with schools, HRACC organizes student art displays honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These exhibits inspire young people to engage with themes of justice, equality, and civil rights, fostering creativity while building awareness of social issues.

  • Public Workshops and Panels: Throughout the year, HRACC hosts educational workshops and community panels on topics such as nonviolent conflict resolution, civil rights history, and local advocacy efforts. These events provide practical skills and inspire community-led action for justice and human rights.

HRACC is committed to making human rights education accessible to everyone in the community. We distribute a range of materials and resources, including:

  • Human Rights Libraries: HRACC stocks local schools, libraries, and community centers with foundational texts like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, civil rights literature, and social justice guides, making them freely available to the public.

  • Digital Resources: Our online materials include access to articles, guides, and interactive content on topics such as anti-discrimination laws, housing rights, and community organizing. These digital resources are designed to reach a wider audience and empower individuals who may not access traditional libraries.

  • Community Resource Kits: We assemble educational kits with printouts, booklets, and activity guides on topics like nonviolence, civic rights, and youth engagement, which are distributed at events and community gatherings. Each kit is tailored to meet the needs of various age groups and backgrounds, ensuring that the resources are relevant and accessible.

“At HRACC, we believe that knowledge is the foundation of change. Through learning together, we open doors to a more just and compassionate world.
